MCGH hosts 1st Annual Kids' Night

With the growing popularity of ghost hunting, the Motor City Ghost Hunters (MCGH) hosted a training and informational event for children interested in the paranormal last month.

In addition to sharing a love for the paranormal, according to team founder John McCormick, the goal of the July 30 event was to teach the upcoming generation of ghost hunters about safety and respect.

“It is important to enter into our field with respect for others, including our clients, fellow team members and even the spirits we seek,” McCormick said. “We strive to instill values such as no littering, no trespassing, no drugs and no vandalism.”

“These are things we live by,” he added.

Kids’ Night, which had children aged eight through 16 in attendance, covered a wide-range of topics, including paranormal equipment, research and safety, and investigative protocol. The event culminated with an opportunity for the newly trained ‘junior ghost hunters’ to join the MCGH team on a short investigation in Hellenberg Park, which is located on part of the historic River Raisin Battlefield.

“Motor City Ghost Hunters care about the paranormal community and the next generation of ghost hunters and wish to pass our knowledge and dedication to those who will follow us,” said McCormick. “It is important that respect, as well as procedure, is taught and that values are instilled for future generations that will carry on our passion for the paranormal.”

For the children in attendance, like Jessica, 15, from Pontiac, this event allowed her to explore her passion for the paranormal.

“I got interested in the paranormal because of weird things that happened at my grandparents’ house,” Jessica said, adding that it is an interest that she and her mother share. “I wanted to come to the MCGH event because it sounded like it would be a lot of fun and I wanted to learn more about ghost hunting.”

Jessica is not the only one who shares a ghost hunting interest with a parent.  For Midge, who attended with her son Alex, 12, from Eastpointe, Kids’ Night was a great shared experience.

“This is the one thing that my son and I can do together and thoroughly enjoy,” she said.

The event was open for anyone, so in addition to having participants in attendance from Pontiac and Eastpointe, individuals from Toledo, Linden, Roseville, Sterling Heights, Oak Park, Melvindale and Clinton Township also attended this free event.

The Motor City Ghost Hunters hope to make this a yearly event and are already in planning mode for the 2012 MCGH Kids’ Night. More information about the group can be found on their website, www.motorcityghosthunters.com. They can also be followed on Facebook.

Based out of southeastern Michigan, MCGH offers private home and commercial investigations free of charge. They investigate all around the state and country, including operating a newly formed branch, MCGH-Carolina, which is operating out of a suburb of Raleigh, North Carolina.

Motor City Ghost Hunters are firm believers in, and we've made it our goal to be, an anti-vandalism, anti-trespassing, anti-litter and anti-drug group. Motor City Ghost Hunters has never condoned vandalism, trespassing, littering or any illegal activity, and we will NOT participate in any investigation, hunt or event where such activities are present. We firmly believe that permission should be given before entering any area to investigate, if required, even if it means waiting awhile to get permission. If permission can not be obtained, no investigation, hunt or event should take place, PERIOD! These types of activities give all ghost hunters a bad name, and we want no part of it!
